Mark Lapman started in the financial services industry as a stock analyst in the Portfolio Management Department of John Hancock in 1979. He was a member of the team which started Independence Investments in 1982 and went on to manage equity portfolios along with administering marketing, fixed income, and compliance. Ultimately, he served as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board and the Investment Committee from 2000 to 2009.
Along with Mimmy Cooper, Mark founded Cooper Lapman Financial, LLC in 2009 to provide financial planning and investment management services to individuals and families. After almost 14 years of successful service to its clients, Cooper Lapman Financial merged with The Colony Group in early 2023. Mark is excited about continuing his work within this larger and well-resourced company.
Mark received a Ph.D. in History from Harvard University in 1982 and holds a CFA designation from the CFA Institute. He is on the Board of Directors and Investment Committee of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research.
What you might not know about Mark: He has run nine marathons. He is a Licensed Flight Instructor. And consistent with his love of flight—he likes birds! One of his fondest parenting experiences involved breeding 25 zebra finches with his three children. Then, he painstakingly built a new cage for the birds, but it was too large to get out of his basement and had to be dismantled. He learned his lesson on good planning at an early stage!
